These are estimates, not guarantees: each visa office moves at its own pace, and if the consulate needs more information because something on your application was missing or unclear, that typically adds another 3–5 business days per request. The official Chinese visa photo requirements: colour photo taken within the last 6 months, white background, evenly lit with no shadows, full face, bare head, size 33mm wide × 48mm high — see exact photo requirements. Clear eyeglasses are permitted if they don't produce glare, aren't tinted or thick-rimmed, and don't obscure the eyes — removing them is recommended if practical. Upload your photo digitally in COVA — if COVA accepts the upload, a printed photo is normally not required with your passport. If the automated photo check repeatedly fails but COVA allows you to continue, include a compliant physical photo when your passport is submitted. Always follow any case-specific instruction shown in COVA or issued by the consulate — contact us if you run into a "photo check failed" error and we will guide you through it.

The 90-day COVA travel window and the validity of your existing Chinese visa are two separate rules. Your intended China entry date must be within the next 90 days for COVA to accept your application. If you already have a Chinese visa, whether you can apply for a replacement also depends on whether that visa is still usable and on the rules of the consulate handling your case — under current San Francisco Consulate guidance, an otherwise-usable visa with more than six months of validity remaining generally cannot be replaced yet. Note that your old visa will be cancelled once a new one is issued. Passport validity can affect eligibility for longer-validity visas, and the consular officer makes the final decision on visa validity, number of entries, and permitted stay — if your passport has less than 1 year of remaining validity, it is often worth renewing first to keep your options open.

USPS Priority Mail with tracking is our preferred option for most passport shipments. If you need faster delivery, you may use FedEx, UPS, or another shipping service, provided it can deliver to the mailing address in the instructions we send you; options can vary by intake location. Whichever service you use, we strongly recommend tracking. Put your passport in a rigid envelope or small box so it can't bend. Wait for our email with the mailing address and checklist (you get it as soon as you apply — no payment is needed first), and include only what the checklist asks for. Take a photo of your passport's photo page and keep your tracking number. We return your passport by USPS 2-Day Priority Mail with tracking for both Standard and Express; a guaranteed next-day return is available as a paid upgrade.
